Oeuvre unique

……….

“Nicolas Fenouillat, an experimenter in both sound and visual arts, designed for the Force de l’Art 02 a device capable of materializing sound. Partition 01 is a wooden sculpture forming a wall of 3 x 4.50 x 0.80 m, created from the translation of a 9 min 53 sound sequence and of a heart rate recording into a 3D image.
The artist first wrote a drum solo that he played in the nave of the parisian museum,
Le Grand Palais, on the day of the American presidential elections results, the drum solo was based on Barak Obama’s estimated votes curve.
He then recorded his performance as well as his heart rate whilst playing the drums, he vectorised the two curves creating a three dimensional score of music, which is in fact the trace of a unique experience, a sound landscape fixed in time and space.
Through this new work, the artist wants to question the boundaries of a sound phenomenon. Where does the action that produces and accomplishes sound start and finish? What happens to fixed sound in a changing sonorous atmosphere confronted with the viewer’s eye?
What is the representation of the performer’s physical effort faced with his instrument?
Is the heart rate’s rhythm the same as that of the partitions?
With Partition 01, a genuine event, anchored in current affairs such as the election of the Americen president, becomes the matrix from which the artist establishes an ephemeral, sensitive and sensorial experience which in turn is conceptualised and transformed into a visual work.”
